Madrid’s Teatro Real to stage revival of Allen’s Los Angeles Opera production

MADRID – Woody Allen will revive his 2008 Los Angeles Opera production of “Gianni Schicchi,” with Placido Domingo in the title role, for Madrid’s Teatro Real.

A just-over an-hour comedic opera, Allen’s version of Giacomo Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” will run from June 30 through July 12, 2015 as part of a double bill with Enrique Granados’ “Goyescas.”

Allen is billed as the revival’s stage director. Musical director is Giulano Carell, set and costume designer Santo Loquasto, lighting designer Mark Jonathan.

The 2008 Los Angeles Opera’s “Gianni Schicchi” marked the first time Allen directed an opera. Just how actively he will be involved in the Madrid revival is another question.

original production enjoys a lot of leeway between dispatching assistants to oversee the revival and attending final rehearsals, or being present for more or the whole of the staging process.

Allen always played down his operatic expertise: “I have absolutely no idea what I am doing,” he told the Los Angeles times before the opening of “Gianni Schicchi” in 2008.

That didn’t stop his Los Angeles Opera production’s winning critical plaudits. “Gianni Schicchi” buzzes with the freneticism of his early comedies,” Variety wrote.

Allen currently has period feature “Magic in the Moonlight,” with Colin Firth and Emma Stone, in advancing post-production. He is also due to bow a musical version of “Bullets Over Broadway” in New York this spring.

Spring to summer 2015 is still a long way off, though that time of the year often catches Allen in pre and production on his annual feature.

“The idea is of course to count on him [being in Madrid],” said the Teatro Real’s new artistic director Joan Matabosch, presenting its 2014-15 season.

As for how long Allen might be there, time will tell.

    2. wiffy says:

He could take the whole family to Madrid for the production. Spend a year in Madrid/Spain out of this abominable fray. Madrid/Spain is a fantastic place to live and let live and he will be well appreciated here where innocent before proven guilty is still the order of the day.

    3. Steven Kaye says:

Cool. The original production was extremely well received. Woody can do no wrong!

    4. The truth fears no questions says:

Boycott every distributor and performer who agrees to work with Woody email them if you can let them know that when you align you self with an accused child molester when a victim says it’s true face the consequences. This is not the kind of entertainer we want to see publicly or his works the two are inseparable.

We will not attend your shows we will not buy your products that support Woody Allen. The new theater show Bullets over Broadway is already suffering serious sales drops through boycotts. IT WORKS.

      • Ted Salins says:

There is no forensic evidence or witnesses . The key word here is “accused”. In the US, you are innocent until proven guilty.

What have you done to help the plight of abused children?

    5. Ronifer says:

How about the ugly little talented lying pervert staying there – FOREVER ?
