Mike Leigh’s latest entry is an early favorite at the 67th Cannes Film Festival, with Variety critic Scott Foundas calling the period drama “an ecstatically beautiful and exquisitely detailed portrait of the artist as a cantankerous middle-aged man.”

The Sony Pictures Classics release, starring Timothy Spall, is playing in competition at the festival and tells the story of 19th century artist J.M.W. Turner.

Co-starring Dorothy Atkinson, “Mr. Turner” hits U.S. theaters this fall.
