Watch: ‘Maleficent’ Video Incorporates Disney Nostalgia

While the latest video for Disney’s “Maleficent,” released online on Wednesday, doesn’t reveal as much in the way of story as previous trailers, it does benefit from mixing the old with the new.

The vid starts with a clip from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty,” with its old school 2D animation, then transitions into live action images of the modern retelling, starring Angelina Jolie as the titular villain. It also shows some more of Maleficent’s fierce powers.

The upcoming Disney fantasy film comes on the heels of several modern spins on classic fairytales in recent years, including “Alice in Wonderland,” “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Oz the Great and Powerful.” The story follows Maleficent, showing why her heart has turned to stone. It also shows more of Aurora, the famous “Sleeping Beauty,” while she’s awake before her slumber that begins on her doomed sixteenth birthday.

Along with Jolie, the movie also stars Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville, with Robert Stromberg directing. It’s set to hit theaters May 30.

“What makes a good fairy…Go bad?”
I’m sorry, am I watching the same trailer as you? This looks bad.

Also, can’t help laughing at the fact that trailer-voice guy here can’t pronounce the word “Maleficient.” Best thing in the entire trailer.

  2. Actually, the animation in the beginning is not from the original Sleeping Beauty movie from 1959. The animation in that movie is far superior to the animation used in this trailer. But Maleficent will be a great Disney movie anyway I think.

  3. Blonde, blue-eyed Jesus says:

Looks too scary for little kids, doesn’t it?

  4. coco says:
