Awards will be broadcast on IFC at 10 p.m.

With Santa Monica drenched from heavy rain, the red carpet for this Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards is being held in a beachside tent. The 29th annual awards will be live streamed above until 1:30 p.m. PST.

Comedian Patton Oswalt will host the ceremony, which recognizes films budgeted at $20 million or less.

There’s great overlap this year between the Spirit and Oscar nominees. All four of the actors favored to win gold on Sunday, Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey, Lupita Nyong’o and Jared Leto, are nominated today for a Spirit Award. If all four are victorious today at the Spirits and Sunday at the Academy Awards, it would mark the first time that all the acting accolades have matched up.

“12 Years a Slave” and “Nebraska” lead the pack with seven and six noms, respectively. Both are up for best picture at the Oscars. The two dramas will vie for best feature against “All Is Lost,” “Frances Ha” and “Inside Llewyn Davis” at the Spirits.

The event will be broadcast on IFC at 10 p.m.

  1. MonkeyPuppet says:

This is the most uncomfortable show carpet I’ve ever seen. I’d rather have someone asking these people “who are you wearing” than this awkward, incongruous brand mention of Unilever in the midst of discussing the work. I know Unilever is trying to re-brand themselves … but I don’t think this is the way to do it.

  2. Filmmaker 100000 says:

Elvis Mitchell is kind of an idiot, isn’t he? He doesn’t seem to really listen to what his interviewees are saying.
