Watch: First Trailer for Jeremy Renner’s ‘Kill the Messenger’

Focus Features has unveiled the first trailer for Jeremy Renner’s journalism drama “Kill the Messenger,” due for release on Oct. 10.

Story is based on investigative journalist Gary Webb’s stories alleging the CIA’s involvement in the spread of crack cocaine in Los Angeles — and the consequences Webb faces for his whistle-blowing.

“National security and crack cocaine in the same sentence — does that not seem strange to you?” Renner asks early in the trailer.

Michael Cuesta is directing from Peter Landesman’s script. Focus acquired worldwide distribution rights at Berlin last year.

Rosemarie DeWitt, Lucas Hedges, Robert Patrick, Barry Pepper, Michael Sheen, Paz Vega, Michael Kenneth Williams and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are also starring. Producers are Scott Stuber, Renner and Naomi Despres.

AWESOME TRAILER! This is going to be a great film.

I’m so excited that Gary Webb’s TRUE story is going to be told. This man is a hero and his story has never been more relevant. Today whistleblowers are prosecuted as criminals and the press is increasingly censored from reporting uncomfortable truths that would harm the establishment. For more on Gary Webb and the uncomfortable truths he exposed, please check out his book DARK ALLIANCE. RIP Gary Webb.

This looks excellent. Not to mention a great showcase for Renner too, wow. It’s been too long since he’s been allowed to command the screen and I get the feeling from this trailer that he’s been saving up for it. It’s been a while since we’ve had a good whistleblower story, but Webb’s in particular is very special. Didn’t know how to feel when I first heard about the film, but the cast and crew appear to be game. My expectations are considerably raised. The fall release date also now makes a lot of sense to me.
