Variety Launches New ‘Contenders’ Site for Awards Season

It’s called awards season, but really, the pursuit of kudos gold has become a year-round preoccupation for showbiz insiders.

To wit, it seems like just yesterday Matthew McConaughey was thanking the Academy for his Oscar for “Dallas Buyers Club”; now he’s high on the list of candidates for a lead actor Emmy thanks to his turn on HBO’s “True Detective.”

To help industryites keep up to speed in an ever-changing landscape, Variety is unveiling the Contenders: a central online hub for all awards coverage, features and analysis, from Oscars to Emmys, Grammys to Tonys, Golden Globes to the guild, critics groups and craft union honors and many others. Contenders also features easy to use lists of nominees and winners for key awards, a detailed event calendar and videoclips from Variety’s studio sessions with movers and shakers.

The Contenders brand will also extend to Variety’s print publications, spotlighting awards coverage in our weekly magazine and in Extra Editions throughout the year. Emmy season kicks off this week with the first of eight Extra Editions examining the playing field for TV and digital awards hopefuls.

We hope the Contenders will offer one-stop-shopping for everything you need to survive the for-your-consideration crush. As always, we welcome your feedback and thank you for giving us your consideration.
