Universal Pictures has optioned the rights to the book “Egg and Spoon” written by Gregory Maguire.
The novel is set to be published in September by Candlewick. Maguire is the author of the popular books in the Wicked Years series, including “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” which was the inspiration for the smash hit Broadway musical.
Universal previously teamed with Platt and Maguire on “Wicked,” which is currently in its 10th year on Broadway. Along with being a producer for the “Wicked” musical, Platt will also produce the film adaptation currently being developed at Universal.
The story follows two girls’ lives that collide, an escapade that includes mistaken identity, a prince traveling incognito and, in a typically Maguire-esque touch, a Russian witch who lives in a house that stands on chicken legs (as in the Russian fairy tale icon Baba Zaga).
Senior VP of production Kristin Lowe and director of development Sara Scott will oversee the project for the studio. Adam Siegel will oversee on behalf of Marc Platt Productions.
Maguire is repped by APA, which worked in conjunction with John Hawkins & Associates in the deal.
