ROME – Hong Kong multi-hyphenate Fruit Chan will be the guest of honor at the 16th Far East Festival in Udine, Italy, Europe’s biggest showcase of genre and mainstream Asian cinema.
Chan, a maverick director, producer and actor, is known for directing pics about the lives of ordinary people in Hong Kong, including “Made in Hong Kong,” “Hollywood Hong-Kong,” and “Durian Durian.”
Udine will screen the “definitive version” of Chan’s latest work “The Midnight After” (pictured), the fest said. The pic is a genre-bender that mourns the dissolution of Hong Kong’s core values since its handover to China in 1997. “Midnight” world-preemed to positive reviews in Berlin but has since been retweaked by Chan.
In Udine, Chan will hold an onstage conversation about “The Midnight After” with Rome Film Festival topper Marco Mueller, a known Asian film specialist.
The 16th edition of the Far East Festival will run April 25-May 3.
