Tribeca Film Festival Expands Online Programming, Sets Free Streaming Titles

The Tribeca Film Festival will expand its digital platform to include Tribeca N.O.W., a lineup of online storytelling available free to the general public, while continuing its tradition of streaming select titles online during the festival window with offerings this year including “Vara: A Blessing” (pictured above).

Tribeca N.O.W. will spotlight the work of 12 creative teams, ranging from Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair’s pot-delivery-man webseries “High Maintenance” to the film and animation projects of Factory Fifteen to the online photo displays of artist Mollie Mills. The showcase joins an ever-growing roster of new media initiatives at the future-focused Tribeca, including Storyscapes, the main slate section that focuses on multiplatform work.

“Vara,” Khyentse Norbu’s Bhutanese tale of a young woman whose spiritual devotion comes up against worldly obstacles, will stream free online as part of the Tribeca Online Festival, alongside three other features and four shorts. Among the other features on the list are Midi Z.’s drug trafficking tale “Ice Poison,” Sabine Lubbe Bakker and Niels van Koevorden’s “Ne Me Quitte Pas,” about a friendship between two alcoholics, and “True Son,” Kevin Gordon’s doc about a young visionary in Stockton, Calif.

The fest’s digital offerings also will encompass its second annual Vine movie competish, #6SECFILMS, for which auds can vote online.

In addition, Tribeca Film, the distributor loosely affiliated with the festival, will release a trio of its slate’s festival films on-demand during TFF as a means of capitalizing on fest publicity to drum up interest among V.O.D. auds. Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly’s “Beneath the Harvest Sky,” John Butler’s “The Bachelor Weekend” and Marion Vernoux’s “Bright Days Ahead” will hit on-demand platforms in the same window as the fest, which runs April 16-27.
