Mongrel Intl. has acquired international sales rights to Australian stage director Simon Stone’s feature bow “The Daughter,” and will be repping the title during the Toronto film festival, the company announced today.
Mongrel Media will distribute in Canada, while Roadshow, which has backed “Daughter” since development, will release in Australia and New Zealand.
The pic is produced by Jan Chapman (“The Piano,” “Bright Star”) and Nicole O’Donohue (“Griff the Invisible”), while its ensemble cast includes Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill and Miranda Otto.
“Daughter” is inspired by Stone’s award-winning contemporary adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s “The Wild Duck,” which toured Europe to wide acclaim. Lensing starts Sept. 12 in Sydney.
“We’re indebted to Jan and Nicole for entrusting us with what will be an extraordinary film,” said Mongrel Media president Hussain Amarshi. “It fits perfectly with Mongrel’s plan to bring prestigious entertainment to intelligent audiences in Canada and now throughout the world.”
Mongrel Media launched its international sales division in May; veteran international sales exec Charlotte Mickie is the unit’s president.
