It’s not the first unusual title for Schilowitz, who was “leader of the rebellion” when he was topper of Red Camera Co., and still holds the title “futurist-consigliere” under his consulting deal for 20th Century Fox.
“(CinemaVangelist) really puts a fine point on what I’m actually doing, which is evangelizing the cinema of the future and the cinema of today, and exploring what the means,” Schilowitz said.
He will work with Barco on pushing the envelope for entertainment, something Schilowitz said he has done throughout his career. He is already working with Barco on advanced cinema projects that will be shown at this year’s CinemaCon, March 24-27 in Las Vegas.
“Connecting technology to the human stories of where technology and image meet, is what I’ve done in the past within a number of different companies. I was that guy out in the world teaching people how technology relates to them and why it’s so important to them, and that’s part of what I’m bringing to Barco and their whole new vision of cinema.”
Barco will show several initiatives at CinemaCon. One that it has already announced is CinemaBarco, which aims to integrate social media, promotional content in theater lobbies. Also there are Barco’s projector tech, including the Auro 11.1 3D sound system and the new laser projector it will show at CinemaCon, to create an audience experience that begins the moment a ticketholder enters the building.
Schilowitz said that as technology is overtaking the motion picture industry, some of classic showmanship of the movie business is getting lost, and he hopes Barco’s initiatives will help bring it back. “Technology needs to be part of the story, but not the story,” he said.
“That’s one of the things that is very core to my DNA, connecting the world of excitement and showmanship to technology.”
