‘Superchondriac’ Continues Boffo Run in France

Dany Boon’s comedy breaks 2014-13 first-weekend records

PARIS – “Superchondriac,” the latest comedy from “Welcome to the Sticks” director Dany Boon, has notched up a standout first-five-day 1.7 million admissions in France – roughly $15.2 million in box office – according to its French distributor, Pathe.

B.O. figure makes for the biggest bow in France since “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” in November 2012.

Boon’s previous comedy, “Nothing to Declare,” scored more – about $19.9 million – but played 1,036 screens vs. “Superchondriac’s” 836.

“With an admission/screen average of 2040, it’s a fantastic first weekend for ‘Superchondriac,’ though the weekend has been slightly lower than could have be expected, especially on Sunday,” said Eric Marti, Rentrak general manager, France.

Sunday saw brilliant sunshine in France, tempting many people to go out and about. Significantly, “Superchondriac’s” France/Paris ratio was an amazing 8:2, when four is already considered a good average, Marti said, adding that Boon’s fourth feature as a director is tracking for close to 2 million admissions – about $18 million – for its first-week cume.

Pic’s performance outside Paris indeed looks like the key to its socko B.O. In the French capital, “Superchondriac” was 67% up on Liam Neeson starrer “Non-Stop,” that put in an impressive first five days $3.6 million off 442 screens, the best bow this year of any foreign film in France.

In France as a whole, however, “Superchondriac’s” box office was 325% up on “Non-Stop’s.”

Sunday turned into something of a Danny Boon fest in France, as TF1, its biggest free-to-air broadcaster, re-aired “Welcome to the Sticks,” Boon’s breakthrough blockbuster, which notched up 11.3 million viewers and a 41.1% audience share, another extraordinary result.
