Sundance Institute will present the Sundance Next Fest summer festival on Aug. 7-10 in Los Angeles.
The event — headquartered at the Theatre at Ace Hotel — offers feature and short film screenings, some paired with live music performances. The extension of the Next section at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City is being offered for the second year in a row in Los Angeles following last year’s Next Weekend event.
The Sundance Film Festival programming staff will select the films and music acts. The kickoff event will be the screening of a cult classic film at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery — similar to last year’s double-bill screening of Chris Smith’s documentary “American Movie” and the film it chronicled, Mark Borchardt’s “Coven.”
Titles that have premiered in the Next section at Sundance, launched in 2010, include “Bellflower,” “Blue Caprice,” “Compliance,” “Sleepwalk With Me” and “Sound of My Voice.”
“Independent artists working in film and music have a profound impact on our culture, but there are few opportunities to enjoy them side by side,” Robert Redford, Sundance Institute president, said. “Next Fest will break down those barriers and explore what these artists and audiences have in common — an appreciation for exceptional creative vision.”
