Sundance: IFC Midnight Takes Horror Movie ‘The Babadook’

The Babadook Sundance

Film premiered in Midnight section

IFC Midnight has acquired U.S. and Latin American rights to Australian horror film “The Babadook” following its world premiere in the midnight section at Sundance.

The film, directed by Jennifer Kent from her own screenplay, stars Essie Davis as a single mother coping with her troubled son and the shadowy monster that has taken over their home.

The film was produced by Kristina Ceyton of Causeway Films and Kristian Moliere; executive producers are Jonathan Page, Michael Tear, Jan Chapman, and Jeff Harrison.  The supporting cast includes Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney, Barbara West and Ben Winspear.

Screen Australia is a major investor in the film and supported its promotional efforts in Sundance.

The deal was negotiated by Arianna Bocco for IFC with John Sloss for Cinetic Media, on behalf of Harold van Lier and Charlotte Mickie for eOne and the filmmakers. eOne Films International secured a multi-territory sale of the film last week to Wild Bunch for France, Germany and Switzerland.
