The Case Against 8 Sundance

HBO Documentary Films will release “The Case Against 8″ in theaters on June 6 in Los Angeles and New York, followed by an expansion on June 13.

HBO will broadcast the doc June 23, three days before the first anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling which overturned California’s ban on same-sex marriage.

“The Case Against 8″ won the Sundance Film Festival Directing Award in the U.S. Documentary category for directors Ben Cotner and Ryan White. It also won a South by Southwest audience award last week in the festival favorites category.

The film includes behind-the-scenes access to the legal team of conservative Ted Olson and liberal David Boies along with the four plaintiffs in the suit.

“We feel it’s important to bring the story of the men and women behind this roller-coaster battle to screens across the country, and we’re extremely proud to bring attention to a fundamental civil rights issue that faces the country today,” said Sheila Nevins, president of HBO Documentary Films.

Currently, 17 states and the District of Columbia have legalized same-sex marriage

“The Case Against 8″ is produced by Cotner and White. Co-producers are Rebekah Fergusson and Jessica Lawson; associate producer is Carin Bortz.
