New Regency has ditched plans to produce “Pyongyang,” a paranoid thriller starring Steve Carell that was to be set in North Korea.

The decision came after a group of hackers called the Guardians of Peace threatened to attack theaters showing “The Interview,” which centers on an assassination attempt against dictator Kim Jong-un. The country has denied involvement but praised the hackers.

New Regency is 20% owned by News Corp., parent of 20th Century Fox. The studio had indicated to New Regency that it would not release the project.

New Regency announced the project in October with plans for director Gore Verbinski to start shooting in March. The  film was the first in a multiyear deal between Verbinski’s Blind Wink and New Regency.

Steve Conrad (“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”) was writing the screenplay.

Really, really pathetic. The threats are so obviously not credable

  2. I think if current president is Bush(he called North Korea axis of evil),
North Korea would not have tried to attack US film studio.
Obama is a intelligent guy,but have no power make bad guys fearful.
Therefore people in movie industry tend to avoid contents related to North Korea for their self defense.
USA is truly most strong country in the world with no doubt,
but no leadership make the strength of USA dim.

  3. Greg says:

Absolutely disgusting. Every such capitulation/surrender sets the stage fir the next. This seems like a real loss, too, given the superb screenplay for “Mitty” and the very talented Steve Carell.

There goes my N.Korea Musical project: “Happiest Little Country in the World”… Including such great songs as: “You’re Still the Un” – “Who Let the Dogs Out” -“I Shot My Uncle but I did not Shoot the Deputy”.

  7. Ron says:

Well, you can always go back to denigrating Christian Tea Party Vatican conservative capitalist American types… they won’t terrorize or nothing.
