Previous record holder was the first "The Amazing Spider-Man.”

HONG KONG – Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” grossed $6.92 million over four days in India, earning it the opening weekend box office record for a Hollywood film in the world’s second most populous nation.

The previous record holder was the first instalment of “The Amazing Spider-Man.”

Handled by Sony Pictures India, the India release involved multiple permutations English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu language versions, as well 3D, 2D, IMAX 3D and Dolby Atmos options.

While Hollywood movies generally have less than 10% of the Indian market “Spider-Man 2”’s score is the fourth highest among all films this year.

“We have taken a mass marketing approach to this film with some unique and very local innovations, further amplified with the invaluable support of the entire Sony group,” said Kercy Daruwala, Managing Director – Sony Pictures India, in a statement. “We have some very good weeks ahead of us as we continue to reap the benefits of an open release period coupled with great word-of-mouth and repeat viewing.”
