Rebel Wilson will star in New Line’s update of Goldie Hawn’s 1980 comedy “Private Benjamin.”

Mark Gordon is producing the movie. New Line is seeking a director.

Hawn portrayed a woman who joins the U.S. Army after her new husband, played by Albert Brooks, dies on their wedding night during sex. Wilson will portray a different character — a redneck who enlists in the Marines to get out of a tough situation.

The original “Private Benjamin,” which also starred Eileen Brennan, was a major hit with $70 million at the domestic box office.

Wilson starred in “Pitch Perfect” and is attached to the sequel. She also stars in the ABC sitcom “Super Fun Night.”

Gordon’s feature film credits include “2012,” “Source Code,” “Saving Private Ryan” and “10,000 B.C.” He’s also the executive producer of “Criminal Minds” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Wilson is repped by WME.

This will be the stupidest re-make of all time. I love Rebel but, we all know she would never pass the physical and weight requirements. The must be a better venue out there for the talented actress. Rebel, look around for something worthy of you.

    Great article.

Don’t call it “Private Benjamin”, because that’s clearly not what it is (Judy Benjamin was a spoiled rich girl who couldn’t fit in to the spartan life of a soldier). It may be loosely based on that, and reworked to Ms. Wilson’s particular talents, but if it’s called “Private Benjamin” it will be inviting negative comparisons to the near-perfect and beloved original.
