Rachel Weisz, Harvey Keitel, Paul Dano Join Michael Caine on Paolo Sorrentino’s ‘Youth’

Pathe Intl. to introduce buzz-title at Cannes

PARIS — Rachel Weisz, Harvey Keitel and Paul Dano (“Little Miss Sunshine”) have joined Michael Caine for Paolo Sorrentino’s ‘Youth” (aka “In the Future”), the Italian director’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning “The Great Beauty” and a buzz-title among distributors in the run-up to Cannes.

Lead-produced by Sorrentino’s longtime producers Nicola Giuliano, Francesca Cima and Carlotta Calori, partners at Rome’s Indigo Film, “Youth” is co-produced by Gallic powerhouse Pathe, which has also taken sales rights. Pathe Intl. will introduce “Youth” — known to some foreign distributors by its Italian title, “La Giovinezza” — to buyers at next week’s Cannes Market.

Written by Sorrentino, the drama about two old friends on vacation in the Alps, is also co-produced by Bis Films, Switzerland’s C-Films and London-based Number 9 Films.

It is co-financed by Italian distributor Medusa/Mediaset.

“Youth” turns on Fred and Mick, both knocking on 80 — one a long retired composer-conductor, the other a still-jobbing film director — who are vacationing together in an elegant hotel in the lap of the Alps.

Sensing their time could be quickly running out, they decide to face the future together, regard with curiosity and tenderness their children’s confused lives, the enthusiasm of Mick’s young writers and the other guests at their hotel.

Mick is scrambling to finish what he imagines will be his last important film. Fred gave up his music career a long time ago.

But there is someone who wants at all costs to hear his compositions and to see him conduct again.

“Youth” is set to go into production this month.
