NEW YORK (AP) — Four people were taken into custody on drug charges after police investigating the death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman executed search warrants at several New York City apartments, two people with knowledge of the investigation said Wednesday.

A confidential source provided a tip that the suspects may have supplied Hoffman drugs, according to the people, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because investigators have not obtained evidence to corroborate the reported connection.

Police say undisclosed quantities of heroin and marijuana were found Tuesday night in the three apartments in a lower Manhattan building. The four suspects — three of whom live in the building — face charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Two also face charges of criminal use of drug paraphernalia.

Hoffman was found dead over the weekend in his Greenwich Village apartment with a syringe in his arm.

The NYPD’s intensive effort to determine the source of the drugs in an apparent accidental overdose is unusual. Courts have found that under state law drug dealers cannot be held liable for a customer’s death.

On Tuesday, a police official said heroin recovered at the Oscar-winning actor’s apartment after he was found dead has tested negative for the powerful additive fentanyl.

Samples taken from Hoffman’s apartment didn’t contain the potent synthetic morphine, which is added to intensify the high and has been linked to 22 suspected overdose deaths in western Pennsylvania, said the official, who wasn’t authorized to talk about the evidence and insisted on anonymity.

Investigators also determined that the “Capote” star made six ATM transactions for a total of $1,200 inside a supermarket near his home the day before his death, law enforcement officials said Tuesday. They’ve been piecing together his final hours using video surveillance to determine his whereabouts.

The 46-year-old actor was found dead in his bathroom Sunday. His door was double-locked when his body was found around 11:30 a.m. by his assistant and a friend, law enforcement officials have said.

Besides the bank records, investigators discovered buprenorphine, a drug used to treat heroin addiction, at Hoffman’s apartment and are examining a computer and two iPads found at the scene for clues, two law enforcement officials said.

Police have said the medical examiner’s ruling on his cause of death will determine whether there is any criminality but they suspect it was an overdose. No official determination has been made yet.

More than 50 small plastic envelopes of heroin were recovered in Hoffman’s apartment along with syringes, a charred spoon and various prescription medications, including a blood pressure drug and a muscle relaxant, law enforcement officials have said.

Some of the packets were variously stamped with the ace of hearts and others with the ace of spades, they said.

Addiction specialist Dr. Louis Baxter, a former president of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, said addicts, especially those who have built up high tolerances, can use as much as two bundles of heroin, or about two dozen packets, per day.

“Addicts with financial means will actually stockpile their drug,” he said. “Someone who has developed tolerance, who is seeking to develop a high, may need to inject every two hours or so.”

The Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home, which has orchestrated the funerals for celebrities including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and James Cagney, said Hoffman’s family has requested a private funeral. It will be held Friday.

****MIRANDA….are you so naive or ignorant that you can see that 22 other people had died so we need to find this stuff get it off the street and put these people in jail yes the user’s purchased at but they did not know what it was cut with. They’re taking a chance and he was clean for 23 years for whatever reason he had me be a relapse maybe he was in a depression and just wanted to get that high back. if you look at any person in the USA dating back to the fathers that founded our country Ben Franklin, and people like that as well as musicians Beethoven Mozart, scientist who created chores for certain illnesses people like Sigmund Freud and Pavlov & riders like Edgar Allan Poe and you know I could sit here all day and rattle of a gazillion names you know a lot of people it helped them so guess whatever their vice was but because they didn’t overdose and maybe people that know the used until they died you know if its okay? Just like it’s okay for the Presidents in the past decade have admitted to doing drugs so for all you know Obama who’s friendly with Jay Z and Kanye and all them when they hang out maybe they smoke a blunt together we don’t know and we never will. So either you are uneducated and don’t know what you’re talking about or you just posting this comment 2 attract attention. But seriously you need to find something else to do with ur time I guess you have a lot of it. This man was one of the most best actors are around and it Timmy he’s almost like one of the most Beautiful Mind Person!!! he took rolls other people would never take how many of these macho men would play a gay porno star and very early in his career I’ve seen almost every movie he’s need except for one or two and they are fantastic the way he can change to fit the part the fact that he’s not only a movie star but it does theater is even better this is a man who did not hide in seclusion like half of these other million dollar mega stars who you now have 10 cars in the garage bodyguards bulletproof cars in glass send isolation he lives in the city he was a socially acceptable person he wanted to be around people he enjoys life he enjoyed his children and who are you to criticize him like that. Obviously at some point he moved out of there 4.4 million dollar house or flat whatever you wanna call it and he was renting this apartment for 9000 dollars a month and you can check since you have all this time. whatever the rhyme or reason for him to deciding to do that we will never know and who are you to criticize him are you 100 percent perfect have you ever never done anything wrong are you 100 percent pure that means you’ve never hit someone laid your hands on someone cursed are you a virgin do you smoke cigarettes do you use alcohol have you ever tried any drugs have you ever gotten the tickets have you ever done anything you legally because technically if you’ve done anything like that then you are the pot calling the kettle black. You know he was sober for 23 years something happened maybe him and his partner had an argument whatever they needed time apart and people relapse it’s OK when you’re out Lindsay Lohan in all those ding dongs and Britney Spears who now has her own television show can fall off the wagon every other month and this is a very well respected man band who not only in 2006 openly admitted to his youth and everything he went through. And he never tried to lie or cover anything up and then you sit here and write negative nasty comments. I think maybe you should do your research next time before you right stuff and you know maybe somebody will do some checking up on you to see how 110 percent perfect you are because the world is not perfect we’re here to work on it and when all not the same because if we were it would be boring. So you probably wake up whenever in the morning have breakfast set on the bed the couch whatever with your computer iPad phone go on the internet and watch Jerry Springer trash talk shows and that’s the extent of your existence you could be married if your husband probably works you don’t you might have kids they’re probably grown and are not around its at home you not interacting with them like he did walking his kids to school and I’m sure you’re not you know making homemade Dennis from scratch its frozen crap that you put in the oven or something from a Boxee just add water or milk in an egg and also are you going to blatant people if they’re obese or have diabetes bike you’re just way out in left field maybe somebody put something in your holy water that’s making you delusional

I know the family wants a private funeral I was wondering if the chandler have/can people make a donation in lieu of flowers or to just show their support for the craft, Theatre, Broadway, Movies, maybe even to the New York City public school system since in the city people to not pay property taxes and music and art are not required by the state so if there’s not enough money those things get cut out of students schedules. I don’t know if he was affiliated with a charity or maybe to Schools that are geared towards helping people BCom masters at the craft they want to persue like: AMDA..which is in New York City the American Music and Dance Academy or maybe a scholarship to an underprivileged child.

Miranda, where do you get off calling a guy that you don’t know at all a long time junkie? The guy has been clean for 23 years and relapses after 23 years and you call him a long time junkie! Hope you never loose anyone close to you from drugs. This is just one example of people who make comments on a subject they know nothing about. What happened to compassion in this world? RIP Phil!

  4. Miranda says:

How on Earth is it their responsibility ? Unless they knew it was going to kill him, chances are they don’t even do heroin. The guy was a long time junkie, he put the needle in his arm, he bought the ticket. They do need to find the making and selling this bad batch of dope, but don’t arrest people simply because they knew someone who knew someone.

  5. Sammy Stone says:

RIP Mr. Hoffman. You were a stellar actor, but your fans are rather annoying.
