Sue Monk Kidd's book debuted at No. 1 on New York Times bestsellers list in January

Oprah Winfrey’s production shingle Harpo Films has acquired rights to “The Secret Life of Bees” author Sue Monk Kidd’s latest tome “The Invention of Wings.”

The book, which debuted in January at No. 1 on the New York Times bestsellers list, centers on the real-life story of two young abolitionist sisters, one of whom is gifted a slave in 19th Century America and who grows up with the girl facing the challenges and injustices of the time together. “Invention of Wings” is the newest selection for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0.

“In her book, Sue Monk Kidd has given us such a rich narrative, compelling characters, and a rare historical perspective that we know will be the ideal foundation for a wonderful film,” Winfrey said in a statement.

Harpo Films, which also creates scripted television through its first-look deal with HBO, last produced the 2007 Denzel Washington starrer “The Great Debaters.” Winfrey is producing food-themed drama, “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” starring Helen Mirren, along with Participant Media and DreamWorks.
