Hollywood Sex Abuse Doc ‘An Open Secret’ to Premiere at N.Y. Festival

DOC NYC, the Gotham documentary festival that launches its fifth edition next month, has lined up a full slate of titles that includes the world premiere of “An Open Secret,” Amy Berg’s doc about sexual abuse in Hollywood.

Michael Egan, who had lawsuits against several Hollywood big shots — including “X-Men” director Bryan Singer — that were later dismissed–had been cooperating with Berg on her documentary.

It’s unclear whether Egan appears in the film.

“Every year, thousands of children swarm Hollywood in search of fame, but what they often find under the surface is a deep and disturbing underbelly of manipulation and abuse,” the film’s official synopsis reads.

Berg is the Oscar-nominated filmmaker of “Deliver Us From Evil,” about sex abuse allegations in the Catholic Church, and also directed West Memphis Three documentary “West of Memphis.”

Laura Nix and the Yes Men’s prankster-activist doc “The Yes Men are Revolting” will close out the fest, bookending the festival with previously announced opener, David Thorpe’s “Do I Sound Gay?,” which, like “Yes Men,” also had its world preem at Toronto.

Additional debuts on the DOC NYC lineup are “Still Dreaming,” Hank Rogerson and Jilann Spitzmiller’s look at Shakespeare performances in a retirement home, and “Almost There,” Dan Rybicky and Aaron Wickenden film about an outsider artist.

On the list of special event screenings, which the fest matches with public conversations with filmmakers, are “Open Secret” as well as Cheryl Furjanic’s diver profile “Back on Board: Greg Louganis,” Chris Moukarbel’s “Banksky Does New York” and Dave LaMattina and Chad Walker’s “I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story,” among others.

The rest of the fest’s slate is organized into juried competitive sections such as “Viewfinders,” focused on distinctive directors’ visions; “Metropolis,” reserved for NYC-centric outings, live performance seg “Centerstage,” “American Perspectives” and “International Perspectives.” Other sections focus on sports, music and activism.

The fifth annual DOC NYC fest runs Nov. 13-20 at a trio of theaters in downtown Manhattan. The full lineup can be found at the DOC NYC website.
