Nicolas Cage will star in the political drama “The Runner,” Paper Street Films and Back Lot Pictures said Friday.

The Oscar-winning actor will play an idealistic congressman who becomes embroiled in a sex scandal. Production will take place in New Orleans amid the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill, the ecological disaster that ravaged the area.

The picture is the directorial and writing debut of Austin Stark, the indie producer behind “Infinitely Polar Bear” and  “Happythankyoumoreplease.”

Production will begin on June 23.

Cage, most recently appeared in the critical hit “Joe,” which was seen as a return to form after a series of dispiriting roles in duds such as “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Season of the Witch.” The supernatural thriller “Pay the Ghost” is among the projects on Cage’s dance card.

Cage is represented by CAA, Mike Nilon at KLWGN, and Jake Bloom and Patrick Knapp at Bloom Hergott.

“The Runner” will be produced by Benji Kohn, Bingo Gubelmann and Chris Papavasiliou for Paper Street Films and Glenn Williamson for Back Lot Pictures.  Ruth Mutch, Noah Millman, Sam Bisbee, Tom Conigliaro and Erika Hampson will exec produce the film.
