My Big Fat Greek Wedding Sequel

Universal Pictures is coming to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” acquiring distribution rights in the U.S. and some international territories for the sequel to the 2002 comedy.

Nia Vardalos is returning as the star and screenwriter for the sequel, in which the revelation of a family secret and an even bigger wedding brings the Portokalos family together again. Vardalos announced “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” in May via her Twitter account.

Kirk Jones (“Nanny McPhee”) will direct. The film will be produced by Rita Wilson and Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. Executive producers are Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer, Steven Shareshian and Vardalos.

In addition to the U.S., Universal will distribute in Australia/New Zealand, Germany/Austria/Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Latin America, Scandinavia, South Africa and Spain. Good Universe is handling international sales at the American Film Market.

The original film, starring Vardalos and John Corbett, was a surprise success with $368 million in worldwide grosses. IFC distributed “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” in the U.S., where it grossed $240 million.

Wilson, Hanks and Goetzman also produced that film, directed by Joel Zwick. Vardalos’ script was nominated for an Academy Award.

Vardalos is represented by APA, Untitled Entertainment and attorneys at Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka, Finkelstein & Lezcano. CAA represents Playtone, Wilson, Jones and Gold Circle.
