The average yearly cost of admissions is up 2%

Another record-breaking year for movie ticket sales led to another record-breaking year for movie ticket prices.

The cost of a movie ticket rose in the fourth quarter of 2013, up 3.7% from the final quarter of last year to $8.35 per ticket, according to the National Assn. of Theater Owners. With an average cost of $8.13, 2013’s yearly cost of admissions is up 2% over 2012’s $7.96.

An abundance of 3D titles with premium pricing, including “Iron Man 3,” “Despicable Me 2,” “Man of Steel,” “Monsters University,” “Frozen,” “Gravity,” “Oz the Great and Powerful” and “Star Trek Into Darkness,” contributed to the rise in ticket prices. A majority of these films were also released in IMAX 3D and comprise the year’s top 10 highest grossing titles.
