Matthew McConaughey to Star in Gus Van Sant’s ‘Sea of Trees’

Matthew McConaughey is set to star opposite Ken Watanabe in Gus Van Sant’s next pic, “Sea of Trees,” as first reported by Variety.

Van Sant will direct with Chris Sparling penning the script.

Story follows a suicidal American (McConaughey) who befriends a Japanese man (Watanabe) lost in a forest near Mt. Fuji.

Gil Netter is producing. CAA and WME are in discussion with financiers and will co-rep the film’s distribution rights.

McConaughey was recently nominated for an Oscar for “Dallas Buyers Club” and can currently be seen in the HBO show “True Detective.”

He is repped by CAA.
