Matt Damon to Return to Jason Bourne Franchise

Matt Damon Return Jason Bourne Franchise

Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass are ready to be born again at Universal Pictures.

Sources tell Variety the the studio is in the early stages of bringing back Damon and Greengrass for an untitled “Jason Bourne” feature, marking the revival of one of Hollywood’s biggest action franchises.

Over the years Greengrass and Damon and have stood their ground about not returning to the CIA property, based on the Robert Ludlum novels, after working together on “The Bourne Supremacy” and “The Bourne Ultimatum.”

But sources now say both Greengrass and Damon are changing their tune and are in early talks to return to the franchise.

Universal is already developing an untitled film set in the Bourne world with Justin Lin directing and Jeremy Renner returning to play Aaron Cross. That film was slotted to bow on July 16, 2016 and its unknown if that film will stay there or if the new “Bourne” film will take it place.

Damon’s three Bourne movies, which began in 2002 and ended in 2007, grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide at the box office.

The WME-repped Damon is about to start filming “The Martian” for Fox and Greengrass last directed “Captain Phillips.” He is repped by CAA.

Universal had no comment on this story.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.

  1. The other guy says:

They could make a prequel – Bourne Prematurely.
Or have him in prison and then escape – Bourne Free
Or how about having it all set during the 24 hours of a public holiday – Bourne of the Fourth of July.
    I could go on, but I won’t…..

  2. Wicasawakan says:

They made a Bourne Conspiracy game..Matt tried to tell the game designers/producers what the game should be like. He demanded it be a puzzle solving game because he didn’t like violent games and they said, “NO, it’ll be a shooter/action game” (so you can lick the left nut). This is why you didn’t see him in the last movie. He got a little too big for his britches and tried to control how the Bourne franchise would go. Sorry..You’re a dancing monkey. Do as you’re told or you can do it someplace else.

Interesting… I agree that the main actor is not always the better suited to decide about a movie franchise- We saw what Bruce Willis did to Die Hard after McTiernan… – but Damon is a clever man, and has understood one thing : the value of a good director.

  3. Tom says:

Maybe this time Bourne can go after “Carlos” and the “Bourne” identity. The films need more than nonsensical gibber-jabber backing their internal logic. But hell yes, more B please! Both actors are great.

  4. Jami Kirby says:

I say heck yes. To see both those guys in the same film would be too cool as well. Jeremy and Matt. That would be a double action of awesome!!

  5. harry georgatos says:

Anyone but a Greengrass. His horrific camerwork ruined two Bourne films and I feel sorry for patrons sitting up,close to the screen with that vomit inducing camerawork. There are better skilled directors then Greengrass. He is as bad as it gets!! Tony Gilroy and Doug Liman were more visually skilled then the shaky documentary hand held camerawork of Supremacy and Ultimatum that makes them unwatchable!!

    • Wicasawakan says:

I agree. The camera work was so bad in the second movie. I was sick and tired of NOT seeing the action because the screen was shaking all over the place. They tried to back it up with “but you feel like you’re in the fight or chase!” No..we didn’t.

      • harry says:

I hope the executives at Universal take note of some of these comments and replace Greengrass as a lot of patrons can’t stomach his wayward visual style that leaves people sea sick. GREEN ZONE was also just as bad and unwatchable.

  6. Belinda says:

They are going to have to use major shaky cam with Damon this time around. He is not the most athletic of actors and, although careful choreography and editing got him through it very well last time, nearly a decade will have passed and he is now in his mid-forties. I hate shaky cam.

  7. Elfpen says:

    IT WORKED!!! =O

  8. commontater says:

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

  9. Matthew says:

I’m going to report Universal with the Humane Society for brutally beating a poor dead horse.

  10. Why not do something innovative like have them shoot a few scenes in each other’s movie? For instance, show things from Bourne’s perspective when he comes in contact with Cross in the Bourne movie. Show the exact same scenes in the Cross movie, but this time follow it from Cross’ perspective. Lin and Greengrass could work together on those few scenes that intersect, but each make their own movies. Schedule the releases to follow each other so that one is just going to video when the new one hits the theaters.

Mix a few of the same characters in both movies and run the stories parallel.

    • jlinn says:

      I like this idea.

      • rony says:

I think that Bourne and Cross should meet. And for me the Legacy ended with some things unresolved. And we need to see the resolution.

      • Dope says:

Technically the Bourne legacy ran parallel to te last Bourne film. Jason and Aaron just never crossed paths. I’d like to see them meet up in the same movie, maybe fight at first with each thinking the other is a hitter for the CIA, then team up and go after the real baddies. But if they do it like you’re suggesting, I think it would be interesting if they showed different parts of the conversations between the two in the seperate films.

  11. No. Matt damon has agreed to do another bourne movie but jeremy renner has already signed a two picture deal to do a spin off series with his character from bourne legacy. There will two different bourne movies.

  12. robb says:

looking forward to this have been waiting for good news looks like today is the day

  13. cadavra says:

Sounds like Jeremy Renner is about to have dinner with George Lazenby.

  14. Cop says:

That film was slotted to bow on July 16, 2016 and its unknown if that film will stay there or if the new “Bourne” film will take it place.

    D’oh! —- “it’s” not “its”

    • Cop says:

“Over the years Greengrass and Damon and have stood there ground….”

This was fixed by the online editor. However, the extra “and” still remains.

“Over the years Greengrass and Damon AND have stood there ground….”

Someone else covered the “there should be their” error, but now their comment is nowhere to be found. CIA? ;D

  15. Cyril Matthews says:

    Title: Bourne Again

  16. Glenn C. says:

It’s better with Damon and Greengrass.

  17. Don Bunce says:

That’s what happens when your only editor is the spell check function in Word.
