Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ to Be Directed by Scott Derrickson (EXCLUSIVE)

Scott Derrickson Doctor Strange Director

As Marvel keeps hunting for its “Ant-Man” director, the company continues to move forward with its next phase of films, tapping Scott Derrickson to helm “Doctor Strange.”

Talks are still early, but sources say Derrickson, who most recently directed “Sinister,” is Marvel’s choice and a deal should be struck shortly.

Marvel had no comment.

The pic will be produced by Kevin Feige, who, over the years, has repeatedly said how badly he wants to get a “Doctor Strange” movie made. Executive producers on the project are Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Stan Lee and Stephen Broussard.

The comicbook revolved around a former neurosurgeon who serves as the “Sorcerer Supreme” — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Strange made his first appearance in the 1963 comicbook series “Strange Tales” and would go on to have his own comicbook series and would appear in several other comicbooks that included “The Fantastic Four,” “Spider-Man” and “Nick Fury.”

Marvel has teased Strange in several pics including “Thor” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and Derrickson’s commitment only moves things forward in getting the good doctor his own pic.

Derrickson and Marvel will now look to cast its title character, and while there is no front-runner at this time, expect a decision in coming months.

Derrickson has been a rising star that Hollywood has been chasing for their big projects after the success of his horror pic “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” which earned $144 million at the worldwide box office.

He followed that up with another horror pic, “Sinister,” which overperformed at the box office and helped gained the attention of Hollywood. With execs always looking for directors that can pull the most out of their budgets, Derrickson is a very attractive talent, with both “Sinister” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” costing less than $20 million but bringing in more than double that in profits.

Marvel is hoping Derrickson can bring the same dark and eerie storytelling style to the “Dr. Strange” story while not breaking the bank on the budget.

He is repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment.

His next pic, “Deliver Us From Evil,” bows July 2 and stars Eric Bana and Olivia Munn.

finally- been waiting a long time-for a DR. STRANGE- movie- even a tv series. Jim Caviezel or Gerald Butler would be good choices.

  2. Lyle says:

As weird as he is, please, please don’t choose Johnny Depp. lolol

  3. hjames78 says:

now go get Patrick Dempsey to play Stephen Strange and we will be set!

  4. jeremys the worst says:

It has to be some one who is kinda tall with dark hair in their 40s or close to 40. No one comes to mind. And why arent thry making a black Panther film yet? We need a intelligent bad ass black guy (other than nick fury), who is a strong leader. He could be a perfect superhero role model for the black community.

    • Eric Ashley says:

Because as much as they tried, and they did try, a lot, Black Panther is kinda boring. Now, War Machine is just cooler if you want to do the racist thing, and create a race based movn ie. And I remember when WM came out, it totally shocked Marvel how popular he was. WM was a lucky accident that they then went and messed up in the follow on limited series.

OTOH, Dr. Strange is cool. He’s also easily messed up.

  5. Jake says:

Pedro Pascal (Prince Oberyn from Game of Thrones) for Dr. Strange.

    • bitter trekkie says:

NO one, seriously? He doesn’t have to have black hair, the hairdressing dept can fix that. They need to add the white streaks anyway. And I don’t see him as necessarily tall either. He could be average height or even short. Needs to be over 35. Jared Leto, Timothy Olyphant, Jon Hamm, Viggo Mortensen and Patrick Dempsey could work. I’ll be happy if it’s not Johnny Depp.

  6. Fintasy says:

Jim Caviezel for Dr Strange. His acting is impeccable, he can be gotten for cheap which would raise the bottom line profit, he’s already got the mysterious thing going on. I hope he’s considered.

    • Guest says:

I totally agree with you. There’s a scene in “The Count of Monte Cristo” where Jim Caviezel walks down some steps from some kind of blimp I think and he is the spitting image of Doctor Strange…goatee, flowing cape, etc. I just read on another website that Marvel is considering Jared Leto for the part though.

  8. therealeverton says:

Nothing against Dr. Strange, but Marvel Studios are doing Marvel a disservice. With all the risks they took with so many non white characters around, why are we getting yet another White Male title character and still nothing on a Black Panther or Captain (formerly Ms.) Marvel film?

Where is the film NOT led y a white man?

    • Randy Krus says:

I agree….and I’m a white guy. Power Man is coming to Netflix so that should be pretty cool. I think they could mix Dr. Strange casting up a bit though. Maybe get Ken Watanabe for a different take. I think they should definately go with someone older to play the ‘wizard’ archetype.

    • SuperSerb says:

They could do dr. Woodoo, similar story, similar powers, non white character.

  9. jon m'shulla says:

No Johnny Depp please. Do not do that to us. An unknown would be best.

  10. Johnny Depp is the Perfect fit for this role. And maybe Chow Yun Fat as his side kick, Wong.

  11. bigjd1976 says:

    Justin Theroux for Stephen Strange!

  12. Brad Pitt for Doctor Strange! Brad Pitt for Doctor Strange!

  13. BillUSA says:

I haven’t yet seen “Winter Soldier” but have viewed “Thor” many times. Where exactly does Dr. Strange get teased to us? I don’t recall him being referred to by name. What did I miss?

  14. bitter trekkie says:

This has NOTHING to do with the rumors involving Zac Efron and Marvel, right?

    • rod cina says:

Zac Efron For Namor is the rumor.

      • bitter trekkie says:

Ay yi yi that would be even worse! But Marvel doesn’t have the rights and it’s more likely Efron would be rumored for something that’s on Marvel’s horizon. Fingers crossed they mean Nova for the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

      • therealeverton says:

Marvel Studios don’t have the rights to Namor, so any rumours stating it has anything to do with Marvel are going to be false.
