Mark Hamill didn’t think he would ever return to the “Star Wars” universe.
Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the original “Star Wars” films — with the first dating back to 1977 — told BBC News he was convinced that the original cast’s story arc had wrapped long ago.
“It was certainly unexpected,” he said. “I already had a beginning, middle and end. I never thought we’d come back.”
The legendary actor also said he was thrilled to step foot on “sets that evoked so many memories.”
“I thought even if they did a third trilogy, we wouldn’t be involved because it is really about the new generation of characters,” he said.
When the franchise was revived in 2002, Skywalker was only seen as a toddler in “Revenge of the Sith.”
In addition to Hamill, original actors Harrison Ford, who was recently injured on set and is “doing really well,” and Carrie Fisher will also appear in the new movie. The pic, which is directed by J.J. Abrams, is currently being filmed and will hit theaters in 2015. New cast members include Lupita Nyong’o and Domhnall Gleeson.
