‘Maleficent’ to be Biggest Hollywood Live Action Film in Japan in Three Years

Angelina Jolie's spells have greater powers than Harry Potter's

TOKYO — In its 7th week on release in Japan, “Maleficent” has crossed the JPY 6 billion ($58 million) box office landmark, the first live action foreign film to achieve this milestone in three years in Japan, where Hollywood films have fallen out of favour.

The pic earned this amount on 4.5 million admissions from its opening on July 4 to Aug. 20.

The last foreign film to pass this mark was “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,” which achieved $93 million after opening in July 2011.

“Maleficent” is expected to finish with about JPY7 billion ($67 million) on five million admissions.
