Lone Survivor Tracking

School’s out – and the parade of hot new theatricals that enjoyed success at the box office earlier this year has officially begun.

No wonder, then, that the three top-selling discs during the week ending June 8 are all new releases: Universal Studios’ “Lone Survivor,” MGM’s “RoboCop” remake (distributed by 20th Century Fox) and 20th Century Fox’s “Son of God.”

“Lone Survivor,” which picked up a Critics Choice Award as best action movie of 2014, topped both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart — which tracks overall disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined — and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart. The film, which stars Mark Wahlberg as a Navy Seal who with his team sets out to capture a notorious Taliban leader, has grossed more than $125 million in U.S. theaters since its limited opening on Christmas Day.

Second place went to “RoboCop,” the $58.6 million-grossing remake of the 1987 original about a cop who after a serious injury winds up half human, half robot.

And the No. 3 spot on both charts went to 20th Century Fox’s “Son of God,” the story of Jesus that earned nearly $60 million at the domestic box office.

Walt Disney’s “Frozen,” which resurfaced at No. 1 the previous week, slipped back down to No. 4, followed at No. 5 by HBO’s “True Blood: The Complete Sixth Season,” a ranking that indicates that despite the plethora of TV content readily and cheaply available on Netflix, the TV-on-disc business remains viable.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, none of the three top-selling new releases made the top 20 because they’re all distributed by studios that withhold new releases from key rental outlets Netflix and Redbox for 28 days.

“The Monuments Men,” from Sony Pictures, repeats at No. 1, with Universal Studios’ “Ride Along” moving back up a notch to No. 2.

The three other titles that made the top 5 are all from Sony Pictures: “About Last Night” at No. 3, “Pompeii” at No. 4 and “That Awkward Moment” at No. 5.

“Veronica Mars,” from Warner Bros., debuted at No. 9 now that its 28-day holdback from Netflix and Redbox is over.
