Locarno Film Festival Honor Spanish Auteur

The Locarno Film Festival will fete Spanish auteur Victor Erice with a Golden Leopard for lifetime achievement.

Erice kicked off his career in 1974 with “The Spirit of the Beehive,” which is considered a masterpiece. His subsequent works include “The South” and “Dream of Light.” He will be honored with a retro comprising his shorts and medium-length pics and will be holding an onstage conversation.

His films, which are few but all extremely important, bear the signs of a free and coherent filmmaker who can give a personal shape to his stories, combining private and collective memory,” said Locarno artistic director Carlo Chatrian in a statement.

The 67th edition of the Swiss fest dedicated to indie and cutting-edge cinema will run August 6-16.
