Karlovy Vary Film Fest to Pay Tribute to Elio Petri, Anurag Kashyap, Ben Rivers

Indian moviemaker Anurag Kashyap to introduce seven movies at Czech fest

The Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, Central and Eastern Europe’s leading movie event, will pay tribute to Italian filmmaker Elio Petri, Indian moviemaker Anurag Kashyap, and British director and artist Ben Rivers at its 49th edition, which runs July 4-12.

The fest will present a comprehensive retrospective of the films of Petri, who it describes as one of the most significant personalities of post-war Italian cinema. The self-taught filmmaker won the Palme d’Or at Cannes (“The Working Class Goes to Heaven,” 1971) and the Academy Award for foreign-language film (“Investigation of a Citizen above Suspicion,” 1969).

“Bringing Petri’s films to Karlovy Vary is a dream come true, and it was made possible with the collaboration of Paola Petri and Cineteca di Bologna,” said the fest’s artistic director Karel Och.

Kashyap is one of the most highly acclaimed moviemakers working in India. Recent pics include gangster saga “Gangs of Wasseypur,” which screened in Cannes in 2012, and “Ugly,” which played in Cannes last year.

Among the seven movies that he will introduce to Karlovy Vary audiences are “Dev.D” (2009), “Gulaal” (2009) and “That Girl in Yellow Boots” (2010).

As part of the fest’s Imagina sidebar, which focuses on movies veering from common narrative and stylistic patterns, Rivers will present his extensive work, which blurs the boundary between documentary films and a highly personal parable, and often lovingly tips its hat to genre films.
