Karlovy Vary Film Fest Spotlights Variety Critics’ Picks

European Film Promotion has announced 10 pics championed by Variety critics selected to screen at the Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival next month. The lineup — dubbed “Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe Now!” — assembles an eclectic mix of the year’s best-reviewed Euro-backed features, as discovered by Variety’s international team on the festival circuit.

Representing a wide sample of different genres, countries and languages (and yet still managing to include two films with “Blind” in the title), the choices range from French indie “Insecure” (fresh from Cannes) to Fantastic Fest favorite “Grand Piano” (an ultra-tense Spanish thriller starring Elijah Wood).

The full selection includes:

The helmers of all 10 films will attend the festival to screen their work, answer questions from audiences and connect with other rising talents. For “Blind Dates” helmer Levan Koguashvili, this visit marks a return one year after the Georgian director’s pic won the Work in Progress prize in Karlovy Vary.

Launched in 1998, the Variety Critics’ Choice program has been working closely with EFP for the past 15 years, during which the section has drawn attention to 150 films from emerging directors in 28 different European countries.

“This program highlights the work of up-and-coming European directors and draws additional international attention to these promising talents via the editorial and PR support of our partners,” says EFP managing director Renate Rose. “Our strong partnership with Variety and the festival has significantly heightened the profile of Europe’s new, up-and-coming directors not only in Eastern Europe, but — via Variety’s global reach and EFP’s promotional initiatives — throughout the world as well.”

The Karlovy Vary fest takes place from July 4-12, with Variety Critics’ Choice screenings and events scheduled around opening weekend.
