Jessica Chastain is in early talks for the female lead opposite Matt Damon the Fox sci-fi pic “The Martian.”
Ridley Scott is directing.
Simon Kinberg, who has been with this project from the begining and brought the book to Scott, will producer alongside his exec Aditya Sood through Kinberg’s Genre Films banner. Fox exec Steve Asbell will oversee the project for the studio.
Story is based on the e-book by Andy Weir about an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars and must figure out how to stay alive long enough to get back home.
Since Scott’s commitment, the project has quickly come together and should get a greenlight once all the deals are locked in.
Chastain has been particular about what roles she commits to, leaning more towards prestige fare like “Lawless,” “Tree of Life,” “Zero Dark Thirty” and “A Most Violent Year,” which bows later this year.
More recently, she has been moving towards larger-scale projects such as Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” which bows in November.
She is repped by CAA and Mosaic.

Awesome! Jessica Chastain has built a magnificent career with her movies! The Tree of Life, Zero Dark Thirty and The Help are by far my favorites!

Absolutely thrilling book, and Damon is the PERFECT person to play Watney. Chastain will probably play the Commander, in a role that’s beefed up a bit from the novel. And no, Joyce Tyler, Watney’s crew doesn’t die. The crew believe him dead in a storm and abandon him. You should read it, the greatest hard sci-fi since Arthur C Clark, imo.
Living the Geek Life, from the description of the book on amazon, Damon’s character’s crew dies, and he seems to be alone after that. Can you tell me what role there is in this for Jessica Chastain?
I just started the book, based on several great recommendations. There are some other agencies/people involved in the story, though.
Ugh. I am so sick of Jessica Chastain. She is in every movie, every award show. She’s overrated. Not to mention she’s weird looking. Give some pretty actresses like Kristen Wiig, Rosemund Pike or Amy Adams a chance!

Ummm, I think Amy Adams is doin’ just fine with her stellar career. Ms. Wiig seems to have forgotten that her forte is comedy — she is deadly dull when she plays earnest, low-keyed roles. Chastain can be very interesting in certain roles – check her out in TAKE SHELTER and THE HELP for example. She’s very good.
Sounds like a remake of ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS
That was in the era in which there was no capacity to realistically create these fantastic landscapes, unlike today. In that era, Batman was for kids, too.
