Indie Sales will unveil an exclusive teaser of "Moomins" at the EFM

Nicolas Eschbach’s Paris-based Indie Sales has clinched major deals on Xavier Picard’s “Moomins On The Riviera,” the comedy adventure toon feature based on popular illustrator Tove Jansson’s comic strips.

“Moomins” has been acquired by Japan (Phantom Film) and Praesens (Switzerland), among other territories. Nordisk Film will give the toon a massive roll-out across the Nordics on Oct. 10, while Gebeka, a top distributor of arthouse animated fare, will distribute it in Gaul.

Deals were announced on the first day of Goteborg’s Nordic Film Market, which Indie Sales’ Naomi Denamur is attending.

Produced and directed by Hanna Hemilä at Handle Prods. and Xavier Picard at Pictak, “Moomins” marks the first bigscreen adaptation of the beloved 1940’s franchise, and features the entire Moomin clan as they take off on an adventure on the glamorous Riviera.

“I’m thrilled to be distributing this  wonderful movie featuring the Moomins, which are especially loved and treasured in Japan, in their first original feature film based on Tove Jansson’s delightful comic strips,” said Keisuke Konishi, prexy of Phantom Film, whose lineup include “Philomena,” “American Hustle” and various Japanese toons.

Considering the creative strength of Japan’s animation industry, the sale to Phantom speaks volume of the toon’s all-around quality and appeal of the franchise beyond Finland. Indeed, worldwide fans of Jansson will soon be celebrating her centennial anniversary.

Indie Sales will unveil an exclusive teaser of the feature at the European Film Market which kicks off in Berlin on Feb. 6. The French sales outfit introduced the project to distributors at Toronto. “Moomins” was also presented in the work-in-progress session at the Finnish Film Affair in Helsinki.
