Ile de France Commission, Orchestra Ink Partnership

Alliance targets French, foreign, animation movies

ANNECY, France  — The Ile de France Film Commission, one of Europe’s best-known – and most active – regional film-TV orgs, has inked an alliance with the Ile de France National Orchestra, led by Enrique Mazzola.

Signed at the Annecy Animation Festival, the alliance aims to offer at a competitive rate recording sessions by an internationally renown orchestra to film, TV and especially animation productions, leveraging the contacts and market knowledge of the commission.

It comes as, with ever toughening and more competitive markets, animation films have to hone every aspect of their technical package to standout from an ever-larger crowd.

And France’s ability to deliver big animation films – such as “Despicable Me 2” – at a big mark down vs. Hollywood fare is underscoring the international quality of its animators.

Based out of Alfortville in the Paris region, where it has a recording studio and 335 square-meter room for rehearsals and film shoots, the Ile de France National Orchestra boasts 95 musicians. It performs 130 concerts a year, attracting 80,000 spectators in a season, and has a track record of recording accolade-laden young audience CD-Books, such as “La premiere fois que je suis ne,” which won a Grand Prix for Young Audience CD-Books and the ‘coup-de coeur’ prize from the Charles Gris French Academy in 2012.

The Ile de France National Orchestra has performed at silent movie screenings of Charles Chaplin’s City Lights at Paris’ Cite de la Musique, and “Gladiator” at Paris des Congres. It has also accompanied Ray Charles, George Benson, Wayne Shorter and Lalo Schifrin, plus John Cale, Air, Antony and the Johnsons and Patrick Watson at the Rock en Seine Festival.

“The Ile de France region is recognized worldwide for the quality and diversity of its settings, talent and technical savoir-faire,” said Olivier-Rene Veillon, director of the Ile de France Film Commission. “The signing of an offer with the orchestra will enrich this offer, allowing French and foreign producers to access at an attractive rate a high-profile orchestra with a large international reputation for the music of their films.”

Fabienne Voisin, director of the Ile de France National Orchestra, said: “This innovatory and unique agreement will allow us – beyond the pleasure of the two structures working together – to develop a clear offer for animated film producers and it underscores the imagination of players in the Ile de France region culture sector with regards to an animation sector in full-growth.”
