Ian McShane (“Hercules”) and Nelsan Ellis (“True Blood”) have joined the cast of “Bolden,” the biopic about musician Buddy Bolden, considered the father of jazz.

The movie stars Gary Carr (“Downton Abbey”) with music composed and performed by Wynton Marsalis. Bolden was a New Orleans cornet player who was a key figure in the development of rag-time music.

Dan Pritzker is directing from his own script. He completed the first round of filming for “Bolden” in 2010 and will finish the movie with new scenes this fall.

Because of the four-year hiatus, the title role was recast with Carr replacing Anthony Mackie, who could not accommodate the new shooting schedule. McShane will portray Bolden’s nemesis Judge Perry while Ellis will play the role of the wily entrepreneur who manages the Bolden Band.

Jackie Earle Haley had formerly portrayed the Judge Perry role.

Producers are Jon Cornick and Michele Tayler. Executive producers are Leonard Loventhal, Ed Arrendell, and Wynton Marsalis.

McShane is managed by Gallant Management, represented by ICM Partners and Independent Talent Group. Ellis is managed by Brookside Artist Management and represented by ICM Partners.
