Heaven is for Real Movie Review

In a robust week for fresh product, five of the seven top home entertainment sellers the week ending July 27 were new releases.

The Sony Pictures drama “Heaven is for Real,” about the changes in a family’s life when their young son claims to have visited heaven during a near-death experience, debuted at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, Blu-ray Disc and DVD combined, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

The film, which stars Greg Kinnear and earned $91.3 million in U.S. theaters, bumped the previous week’s top seller, 20th Century Fox’s “Rio 2,” to No. 2 on both charts.

Three new releases rounded out the top five on First Alert: the Arnold Schwarzenegger actioner “Sabotage,” from Universal Studios, bowed at No. 3, despite a paltry domestic gross of just $10.5 million; Warner’s “Transcendence,” a sci-fi mystery with Johnny Depp that took in just over $23 million, debuted at No. 4; and Tyler Perry’s “The Single Moms Club,” from Lionsgate, rode its $16 million gross to a fifth-place finish on the overall disc sales chart.

A fifth new release, “An American Girl: Isabelle Dances Into the Spotlight,” from Universal Studios, debuted at No. 7, behind Warner’s “The LEGO Movie,” which fell to No. 6 from No. 2 the prior week. The eighth film in the American Girl franchise was released on disc in advance of its Aug. 9 airing on The Disney Channel.

On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, “Transcendence” bowed at No. 3, followed by “Sabotage” at No. 4 and “The LEGO Movie” at No. 5. “The Single Moms Club,” which generated just 10% of its total sales from Blu-ray Disc, debuted at No. 10 on the Blu-ray chart, while “Isabelle Dances Into the Spotlight,” which generated 13% of its sales from Blu-ray, bowed at No. 12.

“Transcendence” generated 44% of its sales from Blu-ray Disc, a higher percentage than either “Heaven is for Real” (26%) or “Sabotage” (39%).

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “Heaven is for Real” debuted at No. 1 as well, scoring a rare triple-play debut atop all three home video charts.

The No. 2 spot went to Warner’s “300: Rise of an Empire” now that the film’s 28-day holdback from key rental outlets Netflix and Redbox is over, with “The LEGO Movie” slipping to No. 3 from No. 1 the prior week.

Rounding out the week’s top five rentals: Non-Stop, from Universal Studios, at No. 4 and Tyler Perry’s “Single Moms Club” at No. 5
