‘Grandmaster,’ ‘Snowpiercer’ Top Asian Film Awards Nominations

BERLIN — Wong Kar-wai’s “The Grandmaster” topped the nominations announced Tuesday for the 8th edition of the Asian Film Awards.

The highly stylized martial arts drama, which opened the Berlin festival this time last year, collected 11 nominations for the AFAs including best film and best director.

Its nearest rival is Korean director Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi fantasy “Snowpiercer” with five nominations.

Other films with multiple awards nods include “No Man’s Land,” “Cold Eyes” and “Rigor Mortis” with four each. “So Young,” “Like Father, Like Son,” The Attorney,” “Why Don’t You Play In Hell?” and “Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon” collected three nominations each.

The six best film nominees are “No Man’s Land,” “The Grandmaster,” “The Great Passage,” “The Lunchbox,” “Snowpiercer” and “Stray Dogs.”

The awards winners will be unveiled on March 27, 2014 at a ceremony to be held at the City of Dreams casino resort in Macau.
