20th Century Fox has released a somber new trailer for David Fincher’s mystery “Gone Girl,” starring Ben Affleck, ahead of its Oct. 3 release.

The trailer offers the key points of Affleck becoming a suspect of a criminal  investigation after his wife (Rosamund Pike) mysteriously disappears.

“You’re probably the most hated man in America right now,” an interviewer asks his character at the start.

It makes the case that Affleck’s character comes under suspicion because he’s a liar and offers up chilling voiceovers from his wife such as “This man may kill me.”

“Gone Girl” also stars Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, Scoot McNairy and Boyd Holbrook.

It’s the first film for Fincher since “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” although the helmer has directed episodes of “House of Cards” for the small screen.
