Gabriel Luna has joined Ellen Page and Julianne Moore in the indie drama “Freeheld.”

Steve Carell also stars with Pete Sollett directing. Ron Nyswaner is penning the script.

Story follows a New Jersey car mechanic and her police detective girlfriend Laurel Hester, who both battle to secure Hester’s pension benefits after she’s diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Luna will portray a detective on the police force who immediately shows his support for Hester’s fight against the local government for domestic partner rights and testifies on her behalf.

Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher, Page, Kelly Bush, James D. Stern, Richard Fischoff, Duncan Montgomery, Jack Selby and Cynthia Wade are producing.

Luna is best known for his role as the star of El Rey Network’s “Matador,” which was just renewed for a second season. Luna is repped by the Gallagher Stewart Agency, Melissa Breaux at Washington Square Films and Joel VanderKloot of Nelson Davis.
