A lack of new releases in the home entertainment industry’s no man’s season – the period of time between the Memorial Day weekend and the end of the school year – was all it took for Walt Disney’s “Frozen” to once again become the top-selling disc the week ending June 1.
This marks the eighth time since the film’s DVD and Blu-ray Disc release three months ago that it has been No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined.
“Frozen” finished the week at No. 2 on Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, behind 20th Century Fox’s “Avatar,” an even older oldie-but-goodie that was initially released on disc in April 2010. The disc shot back up the charts last week – it was No. 3 on First Alert – chiefly due to a Walmart promotion in which the film was selected as a “Value of the Day” and could be had for $9.96, 75% off the regular price.
Sony Pictures’ “The Monuments Men,” a historical drama about a World War II art-rescue squad, slipped to No. 2 on First Alert and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart after debuting on both charts at No. 1 the previous week.
The highest-ranking new release was Universal Studios’ “Endless Love,” a romantic drama with Gabriella Wilde and Alex Pettyfer that earned $23.4 million in theaters. The film debuted at No. 5 on First Alert, behind 20th Century Fox’s “3 Days to Kill,” an actioner with Kevin Costner that slipped to No. 4 after debuting at No. 2 the previous week.
“Endless Love” bowed at No. 6 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, behind “3 Days to Kill” at No. 4 and Sony Pictures’ “Pompeii” at No. 5.
On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, the top four rentals are the same as in the prior week: “The Monuments Men” at No. 1, “Pompeii” at No. 2, “Ride Along” at No. 3 and “About Last Night” at No. 4.
The No. 5 spot on the rental chart went to “That Awkward Moment,” from Sony Pictures, moving up from No. 6 the previous week.
