Antoine Fuqua is directing the pic from a script by Kurt Sutter. The story follows a left-handed prizefighter who wins a title but suffers a tragedy soon thereafter and must put his life back together to earn the respect of his young daughter.
Whitaker will play Gyllenhaal’s trainer in the pic.
Production will begin next month in Los Angeles.
Whitaker is coming off a strong 2013 with films including “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Out of the Furnace,” and he has continued to stay busy in 2014.
He recently wrapped production on Fox’s “Taken 3” and, following production on “Southpaw,” will jump into starring in and directing Lionsgate’s adaptation of the worldwide bestseller “The Shack.”
He is repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment.
