Exclusive First Look at Amanda Knox-Inspired ‘The Face of an Angel’ (VIDEO)

WestEnd shows promo-reel to buyers for first time at European Film Market

LONDON — Variety has been granted exclusive access to a clip from the promo reel of Michael Winterbottom’s psychological thriller “The Face of an Angel,” which is inspired by the Amanda Knox case. It is the first glimpse of the film, which is in post-production, to be shown anywhere.

The pic, which stars Daniel Bruhl, Kate Beckinsale and Cara Delevingne, is set to be one of the hottest properties at the European Film Market in Berlin, where sales agent WestEnd Films will be showing the film’s promo reel to buyers for the first time.

The film is produced by Revolution Films alongside BBC Films, Multitrade and Ypsilon Films. Lipsync and Vedette Finance are also executive producers and partners on the project.

The film is inspired by the book “Angel Face: Sex, Murder and the Inside Story of Amanda Knox” by the American journalist Barbie Latza Nadeau, and uses a fictional adaptation of the tragic story of the 2007 murder case in Umbria, Italy, and ensuing media circus as a springboard for a wider investigation of society’s fascination with violence.

Here’s the synopsis: The murder of a British student in Tuscany leads to the trial and conviction of her American flat mate and Italian boyfriend in controversial circumstances.

The public interest around the case attracts once successful, but now struggling filmmaker Thomas (Bruhl), to be commissioned to write a film, “The Face of an Angel,” based on a book by Simone Ford (Beckinsale), an American journalist who covered the case. From Rome they head to Siena to research the film.

Thomas has also recently separated from his wife in a bitter divorce and left his 9-year-old daughter in Los Angeles. As his life unravels, he becomes increasingly disturbed by the dark medieval atmosphere surrounding the case and begins to fall into his own personal hell.

Just as Thomas is about to hit rock bottom, he meets British student Melanie (Delevingne), with whom he begins an innocent relationship. This is a beautiful, unrequited love where Melanie provides solace to him and acts as a guide to his own heart. Thomas starts to question what is more important to him, solving an unsolvable crime and writing the film, or returning back to the daughter he has left behind.

    I wish I could say I was shocked by the content of your message, but horrifically, I’m not. I’ve spent a lot of time in Italy, as a cameraman, as a director, and as the husband of an Italian linguist, allowing me to meet all sorts of undercover investigators, chiefs of police, etc. The crazy thing is, the guys on the ground are generally pretty good, but they’re having to work within a corrupt system. All those Hollywood films about rogue FBI agents and bent judges are a lot more real in Italy.

    I didn’t know about Mignini. I do now. There has to be a silver lining to this case. if people like us know about him, the US legal guys must as well. There would be a huge, huge outcry if Amanda Fox was sent back because of one bent magistrate. But maybe it’s a clever double-bluff. (or even an excuse to milk money) You never know in Italy. If the Italian supreme know how corrupt Mignini is, and they have any real integrity, they will overturn the conviction yet again. If they don’t, Amanda Fox will become a legend and the USA wouldn’t dare send her back.

    You’re right: Mignini would make a great subject for a film. Manipulate the narrative, change the names, even blur the region, but keep the specific offences.Everyone would know who it was about, just as they did in The Ghost Writer, directed by Polanski.

    • I hear you. Even though the weird people who think Knox is a she-devil keep saying the investigation was “botched,” the investigators and technicians did their job just fine. You can’t find evidence that isn’t there. It was Mignini who kept misdirecting things.

      For the movie: I’ve never heard Mignini speak, but I kind of see Ted Levine playing a more controlled variation on his Buffalo Bill character from Silence of the Lambs. I get the same body-shame issues vibe from his photos.

      Yeah, I find him THAT creepy.

  2. I have to say, I agree with William Krause. The evidence – that was so badly screwed up – has not changed. They convicted Amanda Fox to cover up their injustice and incompetence; overturned the conviction for exactly that reason, then reversed it again because four years down the line, it’s down to arrogant opinion rather than fact. But why are we all so surprised? The legal system has always been full of holes, and in Italy it’s a joke. As for the film: you will always find someone who wants to make money out of someone else’s misery. Yes, everyone associated with this project SHOULD be ashamed.

      It’s worse than just the usual Italian craziness, i.e. jailing geologists for not predicting earthquakes. Florence’s law is run by a magistrate name Giulio Mignini. Look him up. He has done everything he can to protect the actual murderer (Rudy Guede), has misdirected the investigation of the serial killer The Monster of Florence, has jailed journalists who criticized him, has been convicted of wiretapping political figures and journalists, and who has been described by many, many people as “insane.”

      HE would be a great subject for a movie.

  3. Oh swell. Some Hollywood stars are buying in to the most obvious miscarriage of justice we’ve ever seen. And portraying a sick, twisted, corrupt (and convicted) magistrate as the voice of revealed wisdom, buying into his perverted projections onto a woman whose crimes consisted of having sex and smoking marijuana. Everyone associated with this project should be ashamed.

      Why did she confess in less than an hour? Why did she and her boy friend have 5 different stories about what they did the night of the murder (all contradicted by facts), why did she go to her apt twice (after the murder) where there was a dead body, blood, feces in the toilet , broken glass and never call the police ( the postal police showed up first)?

      • One more thing: do you know what the #1 reason for false convictions is? It’s not jury error. It’s not planted evidence. Study after study shows that it’s false confession. Now, nobody in the public is going to believe this, because “but they confessed!” is an easy way to file someone away as guilty. But it happens all the time. And wouldn’t you think it’s more likely withsomeone who is (1) young, (2) without counsel, (3) in a strange place, (4) doesn’t understand the language very well, and (5) has never been in trouble with the law before? I know I would. Knox fits all five categories. And Sollecito, who fits only a couple of those criteria, never “confessed” to anything.

        It’s a sham, and anyone who supports this travesty is helping make one of the most evil people in the world (Mignini) a popular hero, and helping to free the actual killer, rudy Guede, whose parole next year will undoubtedly be endorsed by Mignini. Good job all-around, Murdoch press!

      • What confession? The one she signed but couldn’t read? It’s just a funny coincidence, I’m sure, the the tape of the interrogation (required by law) was destroyed. It’s not like they lied to her about what was on it– just pure innocent coincidence.
        And, since you obviously haven’t been following this, is what they did on the night of the murder: they stayed over at Sollecito’s apartment. That’s their story, Both of them. The one junkie “witness” that claims to have seen them has been proven to have remembered the wrong night.

        Now explain to me how there is any evidence of them being involved in the murder. You know, the actual crime, not what happened the next day. Because there’s a ton showing it was Rudy Guede, a man they didn’t even know. Fingerprints. Semen. DNA. Where’s the evidence that Knox and Sollecito were even in the room, ever? There is NONE. How did they participate in a bloody murder and leave not a trace of evidence behind? It’s impossible. Let’s put aside the ridiculous alleged motives that keep changing (sex party! toilet flushing! stealing!)– how in the world would they conspire with someone they didn’t know to murder their roommate? It’s crazy. And these “conspirators” didn’t even work out a story. The prosecution is a sick joke, the deranged fantasy of a corrupt, vicious, and insane magistrate (one who believes Freemasonry is the motivation of a serial killer and who jails journalists critical of him), designed for the slavering readership of the Daily Mail.

    Great to see we’re still glorifying murders and scum in the media. They only killed someone, lets make a book and movie out of it and offer them a crap load of cash for their story. Sucks that after all of this time society doesn’t stand by its convictions.

      Obviously the writer doesn’t mind putting discredited stories and lies into the script. Just from the trailer there were blatant lies. Either they don’t care about the truth or they were too lazy to get the truth. Both are shameful.

      Kind of the fake Wiki site someone created. If you say a lie long and loud enough, everyone will eventually believe it as the truth.
