Elton John to Produce Animated ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’

Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and Elton John will executive produce.

Elton John’s Rocket Features banner has acquired the film rights to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” with plans to turn it into an animated feature.

Rocket Pictures CEO Steve Hamilton Shaw and David Furnish will produce the film with the Really Useful Group. Webber, Rice and John will exec produce.

Created by Webber and Rice in 1968, the show has become one of the most-produced musicals of all time and has earned more than $600 million at the box office. It was presented in London’s West End in 1973 and opened in an expanded version in the U.S. in 1976, going on to play 747 performances on Broadway. Donny Osmond starred in a 1999 filmed version of the musical.

Rocket Pictures is currently producing the John biopic “Rocketman” with Tom Hardy set to star as the iconic performer. It is also at work on “Sherlock Gnomes,” the sequel to its 3D animated hit “Gnomeo & Juliet” that earned $200 million worldwide.
