Eddie Murphy’s Fourth ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Gets $13.5 Million Rebate From Michigan

The Michigan Film Office is rolling out the red carpet for Eddie Murphy and Paramount, approving a $13.5 million rebate for the studio’s upcoming “Beverly Hills Cop” reboot.

The film, directed by Brett Ratner and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, has been set for release on March 25, 2016. The project is expected to film in Detroit and surrounding communities.

“We are excited to welcome Axel Foley and the Beverly Hills Cop franchise back to Michigan,” said Margaret O’Riley, director of the Michigan Film Office.  “This project will highlight locations throughout metro Detroit that speak to the city’s heritage while making significant investments in the community by hiring Michigan workers and local businesses.”

“Beverly Hills Cop” was approved for a rebate covering about 24% of $56.64 million of projected in-state expenditures.  The project is expected to employ approximately 352 Michigan workers during the film’s shoot.

The first “Beverly Hills Cop” was released in 1984 and elevated Murphy into superstar status as Detroit cop Axel Foley. The sequels were released in 1987 and 1994; the three films have grossed $735 million worldwide.

The new film brings Foley back to Detroit during the coldest winter on record.

The Michigan film office said a total of  12 projects have been awarded a total of $57 million during fiscal 2014 for $219.7 million of approved production expenditures, creating 1,445 hires.
