Cannes: South Africa’s Uncle Morris Films Moves Into Development (EXCLUSIVE)

South African production service company Uncle Morris Films, which recently worked on Neill Blomkamp’s Hugh Jackman starrer “Chappie,” is moving into movie development and production. Uncle Morris founders are in Cannes to talk to potential partners.

Steven St. Arnaud set up the Cape Town-based company with his wife, Liesel, shortly after working on Blomkamp’s “District 9,” which picked up four Oscar noms. He said Blomkamp’s films have been “ground-breaking for the South African film industry,” and have “set the bar high for the standard of films we want to produce.”

The company is in development on “Devil’s Valley,” which is set to go into production in March 2016. “Valley” is based on Andre Brink’s novel.

The couple has a broad range of projects in development, based on short stories, novels, historical events and news articles.

“We want to produce films that are not necessarily only told with an African voice, but stories that have a common thread of being inspirational and grounded, with a universal appeal,” Liesel said.
