CANNES: ‘Love At First Fight’ Takes Europa Cinemas Label

Love at First Fight Les Combattants

'Fight' a showcase for on-the-rise Gallic talent

“Les Combattants” (Love At First Fight), the feature debut of France’s Thomas Cailley, has won the Europa Cinemas Label as best European film in Cannes’ 2014 Directors’ Fortnight.

Movie is sold at Cannes by Bac Films International. Plaudit is a Directors’ Fortnight prize. The other two will be announced shortly at Cannes.

An acid but upbeat romantic comedy, plus showcase for other fast-on-the-rise French talent, “Fight” stars Kevin Azais (“Playing Dead”) and Adele Haenel, who has already drawn heat for her perfs in films by two top young Gallic distaff directors: Celine Sciamma’s “Water Lilies” and Katel Guillevere’s “Suzanne.”

Azais plays macho Arnaud who is (literally) knocked off his feet by the wild-at-heart Madeleine (Haenel). To cement their relationship, and prepare for the worst-case scenario apocalypse Madeleine thinks could be just around the corner, they decide to attend a boot camp together.

“This is that rarity – a well-scripted and well-acted feel-good arthouse film. Thomas Cailley’s debut feature has witty dialogue and the relationship between the man and the woman at the centre of the film is delightfully modern and free of cliche,” sentenced the Europa Cinema Label jury, made up of four European exhibition circuits.

“Love At First Fight” will now receive the support of the Europa Cinemas Network, with additional promotion and incentives for exhibitors to extend the film’s screen-run.
