Taking another step into the faith-based arena, Freestyle Releasing has set an Oct. 31 launch in the U.S. for “God the Father,” the documentary about a former mob boss who turned to religion.

“God the Father,” produced by Moshe Diamant and directed by Simon Fellows, documents the life and spiritual transformation of Michael Franzese, son of Colombo underboss John “Sonny” Franzese.

Moonstone Entertainment will begin selling “God the Father”next week at Cannes.

Franzese followed his father’s profession as a mobster, making his reputation in schemes such as an elaborate gasoline bootlegging scheme that involved collecting gas taxes and not paying the government. He renounced the life of crime in 1987 and began seeking redemption as a Christian.

“God The Father” includes graphic novel-style animation,  re-enactments, archival news footage and interviews. Franzese co-wrote the script with Moshe Diamant.

Executive producers are Sagiv Diamant and Jonas McCord. Vilmos Zsigmond is the cinematographer.

Freestyle’s faith-based “God’s Not Dead” has grossed $56 million in the U.S. two months, by far the top perfomer among the company’s releases.

“Freestyle was immediately onboard this provocative film when we saw it,” said Freestyle Releasing’s Co-President Mark Borde. “The journey of Franzese from outlaw to devout believer is one that will spark interest in a wide variety of audiences, and we very much look forward to working with the filmmakers on taking their message to the masses.”
